Drain Tile

Drain tile usually fails due to several reasons. Materials of the day such as terra cotta pipe, thin wall black plastic, field tile or big `O` pipe were all commonly used from the 50`s to late 70`s. At that time a lot of these installations were backfilled with clay backfill around the wall of the home. Over time, hydrostatic pressure of the clay freezing and thawing slowly causes the tile to fill with clay and fail. Other times, it could be installed incorrectly at the wrong elevation or even with the holes pointed up instead of down. Every drain tile failure is a little bit different than the next, so we offer what we call an exploration dig to allow us to bid more fairly and also give the home owner a chance to see for themselves what the problem is. This is done by getting a locate from the city to allow us to check the lateral to the City`s storm sewer connection. Then, one corner is usually excavated to see why the tile has failed. Sometimes it`s obvious, sometimes the tile is clear. It`s at this time we use a camera to check all around the home to see where the problem is. This is a cost effective way to avoid excavating the whole parameter of the home unnecessarily. ABC Ranch always uses CSA pipe and fittings, security fence, fire escape ramps and City inspection to ensure that all work is done to Canadian Building code. Filter fabric to help keep silt from contaminating your new tile is used and any clay based backfill always is hauled away and replaced with a good granular gravel with a percolation value or provincial proctor number.
